Why become Chartered?

The letters 'CEng' after your name carry considerable prestige and clearly mark you out as a significant player in the world of engineering and technology.

How do you know when someone is a chartered engineer with CIBSE?

When you become a chartered engineer with CIBSE  you can become either a MCIBSE or both a MCIBSE CENG.

What are the benefits of becoming chartered?

1) The status of being part of a technological elite

Chartered Engineers are at the forefront of meeting the world's most pressing challenges and ensuring society's continued well-being and prosperity.

2) Recognition of your expertise and hard work

And once you have gained such recognition you are unlikey to want to relinquich it. Most Chartered Engineers remain regsitered until they retire.

3)High self esteem

Chartered Engineers place a high value on their award and derive a greater sense of satisfaction from it than from their other qualifications

4) Higher earning potential

Surveys have repeatedly shown that chartered Engineers rapidly achieve higher earnings than their unregistered counterparts- and the pay gap is widening.

5) Improved career prospects

The CEng award demonstartes to employers that the holder has experience, drive and commitment and has fulfilled the competence requirements of an internationally recognised standard.

6) Greater influence within your organisation and industry

Chartered Engineers command respect. They work at the most senior levels in all sectors of engineering and business.

7) Access to life -long learning

Chartered Engineers are kept fully up-to-date on the latest technological developments and are provided with many opportunities to add to their skills.

How do I get there?

The 2 Routes:

There are two routes into MCIBSE CEng membership - The Standard Route or The Alternative Route

How do I know which route is right for me?

The Standard Route is for people who have Engineering Council's listed Bachelors honours degrees plus further study (Masters) or an accredited MEng degree.

If you are not sure whether your degree is Engineering Council listed click here or read through the list of CIBSE Accreditted University Programmes to find out if your study was CIBSE accredited. Alternatively, you can get CIBSE to check your qualifications for you by filling in a Qualification Assessment form

The Alternative route is for people who have experiential learning and other qualifications not ECUK listed.

The Process for both: Engineering Practice Report

Down both routes you would right a 4, 000 word Engineering Practice Report which is based on the 16 competencies under 5 headings - The M21- Competencce Criteria for MCIBSE CEng.

For more information on writing your report and what to include with your application read the M20

The Standard Route: the quicker route to MCIBSE CEng

After returning your Engineering Practice Report you willl be asked to come to a Professional Review Interview- details of which can be found in the M20.

If successful- you will be awarded your MCIBSE CEng- this is your registration with CIBSE and the ECUK.

The Alternative Route:

After returning your Engineering Practice Report you will be asked to come to attend a Competence Review interview- details on which can be found on the M20.

If successful you will be awarded you MCIBSE only- this is your registration with CIBSE.

How do I go about gaining my CEng?

You can stop at MCIBSE if you do not wish to continue to your CEng. MCIBSE on its own is still a very valuable professional standard to have met- and professionally recognised. However, if you do want to achieve your CEng- you have two options:

Option One: Further study to top up your existing qualifications or to gain new ones

Option Two: The Technical Report Route and you'll be asked to come to a Technical Report Interview

For both options you will be asked to have a Professional Review Interview. If successful you will gain your CEng- which is your registration with the ECUK.
