What is the idea behind the CIBSE student rep scheme?

CIBSE have decided that we need to be in better communication with our student members. We need to know what you like about CIBSE membership, what you don't like about it- and what you would like to see more of as a member of CIBSE.

The idea behind the CIBSE student rep scheme is that CIBSE has a presence in your University or College and your University or College has a presence in CIBSE.

Who can be a CIBSE student rep?

First of all- you need to be attending a full or part time Building Services or related UNDERGRADUATE, HNC, HND, BTEC course. You need to be in your first year of study when you apply- so that you are a CIBSE student rep from the very start to the end of your student life.

You need to be confident, have good presentations skills and be committed to becoming a chatered engineer after your course has ended.

We do not want any time wasters applying for student rep status- we would want people who are committed and who are willing to set some time aside for us.

What is involved in being a student rep?

We understand that as a student you have essays, lectures and work experince etc to deal with- as well as trying to work a part time job for some extra cash! So, we try not to ask too much from you!

Once a month you will be asked to perform certain tasks for CIBSE- these could include any of the

following and more:

  • Supporting CIBSE staff members and/or arrangeing a CIBSE presentation at your college or Uni about CIBSE
  • Writing a peice for this website  or the CIBSE journal
  • Distributing CIBSE journals to your peers
  • Attending CIBSE events, conferences etc - all expenses will be paid for- within reason!
  • Being interviews for this website or the journal
  • Writing a profile on yourself
  • Distributing literature, invitations or communications out to your peers
  • Putting posters up for us about CIBSE related awards, events etc
  • Helping us to recruit new members to CIBSE- trhough your uni or college
  • We have a competition between student reps to see who can recruit the most new members- the winner after a year gets a special prize!!
  • you are awarded for meeting deadlines!

So, as you can see there is a variety of tasks and activites that you would need to be able to committ to once a month- they are not long or boring- some would even take you just a few minutes!

What will YOU get out being a Student Rep?

  •  First year of STUDENT Membership FREE! If you are a full time student you get your WHOLE student membership free!
  • A reference from CIBSE to put onto your CV to say that you have been a CIBSE student rep- signed by our CEO!!
  • Exclusive industry contacts should you need them!
  • your writing in print in the prestigiuos CIBSE journal
  • Your writing, profiles and interviewed featured on this website for all to see and read.

What do CIBSE get out of it?
Most of the membership team here at CIBSE are NOT engineers and have never undertaken any qualifications of jobs in engineering. Although we are all trained in CIBSE membership grades and how to achieve chartered status we are not as clued up on what engineering students and graduates would like to know-YOU are! As a student rep attending a university or college on a engineering or Building services degree/course, you know what you and your peers would like to see out of your CIBSE membership! We have the contacts, the information, the advice- but we need you to tell us what you need. CIBSE are always trying to improve our membership incentives, service and support to our members, but we can't improve if we don't have any feedback from you -our members!
The suggestions, comments and questions that we will take away will be priceless information and feedback for us. We can use it to improve our institutions services to its student and graduate members, and in turn hopefully spread the good word of CIBSE around the Building Services student population.
